I have read an article from media magazine winter issue 2023 about is Barbie a feminist film?

https://www.englishandmedia.co.uk/media/5960/mm86_barbie.pdf

Some points i found interesting are

-bell hooks suggests that an oppressive system can’t be challenged and also upheld at the same time

-barbie is shaped by the male gaze and white western beauty ideals

-in the real world women are seen as ‘other’ to men, whereas in Barbie the ‘Kens’ are ‘other’ to Barbie

-interesting how the Barbies had to use seduction to distract the men in the Barbie world to gain their power back

-the film is not an accurate reflection of a reversal of the patriarchy

-Barbies narrative is solved when she enters the real world and literally becomes a woman rather than an object

I have read an article from The Guardian on the film Romeo n Juliet 4EVA

https://www.theguardian.com/film/article/2024/jun/04/romeo-n-juliet-4eva-review-jamaican-teens-breathe-fresh-life-into-shakespeare-romance

Some points I found interesting are

-reimagining shakespeare in this society is quite different as he is quite outdated

-the film appeals to teenagers by creating a classic fantasy love story

-the actors playing Romeo and Juliet are Jamaican and the director is also Jamaican, this shows how the stories can be adapted to be inclusive and the characters can be played by anyone in todays society

This article i have read is about the Song of the Summer

https://www.theguardian.com/music/article/2024/jun/09/frothy-fun-and-hard-to-resist-is-sabrina-carpenters-espresso-the-song-of-the-summer

These are some points that intrigued me

-Sabrina Carpenter took Taylor Swifts top spot on Global Spotify with Fortnight with her ‘frothy, fun and hard to resist’ pop song called Espresso

-Interestingly, Taylor Swift, BeyoncĂ© and Billie Eilish don’t seem to be in a strong position to claim the Song of the Summer

-the song of the summer is an ‘all engulfing seasonal mega hit that defines the cultural moment and transcends categorisation and market demographics’

-Nowadays Tiktok has a major influence on the popularity of songs

-there can be outliers like songs that are resurfaced through TV and film, such as Kate Bush Running up that Hill which became a key summer song in 2022 due to its use in Stranger Things

-the summer pop genre has no boundaries and no hierarchy, as a random song will often overtake a big hitter

-artists plan releases around the idea of gaining the title of song of the summer, however it can’t be predicted by anyone what song it will be

I have read an article on Stranger Things season 1 which is from July 2016 so this is way before the success of the show and the following seasons.

https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2016/07/stranger-things-netflix-review

These points i found interesting

-similar vibe to E.T. but darker

-set in the 1980’s to be nostalgic

-the series was created by Matt and Ross Duffer brothers

-it is scary and grim but also cosy and heartening

-the actors weren’t really famous at the time and. and be believable as pre-smartphone youths
